Open Lecture - Decolonising the Curriculum: Why, What and How

A hybrid open lecture hosted by the SMP

UK time 11:00 – 12:30 Malawi time 12:00 – 13:30
Location Edinburgh City Chambers

SMP were delighted to host Dr Yonah Matemba at this open lecture where he emphasised the need to think about decolonising the curriculum through the lens of an anticolonial framework and identify ways in which a decolonised curriculum in both school and teacher education can be understood and delivered.

Dr Matemba explored the need to challenge generations of engrained thinking, normalised approaches and dominant narratives which perpetuate privilege for some, whilst selectively marginalising others.

Strategies and practical next steps for those working in Education were offered, including focusing on stories of people from formerly colonised and enslaved parts of the world.

This was a stimulating, thought-provoking lecture with a Q&A and discussion.
