E.G.P. - formerly H.E.L.P. (Scotland) - was founded in May 1990 by a group of students from Edinburgh University. The driving force behind the society was Ben Carey - he founded the society to encourage links between students in Scotland and communities around the world.
During its 15 years E.G.P. has grown enormously: it now has up to 80 volunteers participating in 8-10 projects across the world each year. Based at Edinburgh University, E.G.P. is a student run charity that aims to assist in community led development overseas. As a society its energies are centred on the active participation of members during projects in the summer holidays.
EGP has three strategic aims which govern all of the work that we do. These are:-
- To support community led initiatives, working together with people to help them achieve their goals for development.
- Allow students to develop new skills and a wider perspective on the world we live in.
- To promote international understanding through projects that are focussed on building friendship, trust and respect between EGP volunteers and people across the world.
All of the projects accepted and carried out by EGP and our host partners must comply with all three of these aims. In this way EGP strives to provide a useful and valued service in
assisting with overseas development at grass root level.
