Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow
The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow is a global community of over 15,000 Members working together to develop our skills, knowledge and leadership to drive the highest standards in healthcare.
Established in 1599, it is the UK’s only multidisciplinary College representing physicians, surgeons, dental surgery, podiatric and travel medicine professionals.
The College seeks to improve people’s lives through medical improvement and innovation. Today, its education, training and assessment offering enables its Members to develop the skills, knowledge and influence to improve professional healthcare standards worldwide.
Connections between the the College and Malawi date back hundreds of years. David Livingstone, the African explorer and missionary, was an Honorary Fellow of the College. He passed the College’s licentiate examination in order to practice medicine. The College Heritage collection contains a portrait of Livingstone, first editions of his books and a pocket set of his instruments.
Recently, the College has supported healthcare initiatives in Malawi, including the MalDent Project, which has seen 10 students from the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences become the first graduates to achieve the national Bachelor of Dental Surgery degree. Together with 124 students in the pipeline, they will play a vital role in improving access to oral health services.
