Scottish Parliament Elected
22 May 2026
In pursuit of its charitable purposes and as a non-party political organisation, the Scotland Malawi Partnership (SMP) looks forward to constructive dialogue with all parliamentarians elected to Holyrood, including the 64 MSPs who are new to the Scottish Parliament.
The SMP was founded over 20 years ago in response to the deep-rooted civic society links with Malawi that exist between individuals and organisations in all walks of life throughout Scotland. Today, people-to-people, village-to-village and community-to-community partnerships continue to thrive in constituencies from the Borders to the Northern Isles.
Strong cross-party support has endured for the many community groups, churches, charities, schools and universities that have impactful and mutually beneficial links with Malawi and the SMP will continue to champion Holyrood’s Scotland-Malawi engagement.
The Scotland Malawi Partnership congratulates John Swinney MSP, who has been vocal in his strong support for Malawi, on being elected First Minister.
The SMP also welcomes the reinstatement of a Ministerial position dedicated to International Development, Simita Kumar MSP having been appointed as Minister for Equalities and International Development. The SMP will be delighted to invite Minister Kumar back to Edinburgh City Chambers where she has served as a Councillor and the SMP has office space and delicious Malawi coffee!
The CEOs of Scotland’s International Development Alliance (SIDA), Scottish Fair Trade and the SMP yesterday wrote to both Mr Swinney and Ms Kumar recognising their commitment to Global Citizenship values.
