Scottish Global Health Collaborative soon to be launched

19 January 2017

Working with our members and partners, the Scotland Malawi Partnership has been helping establish new systems to increase coordination of effort in Scotland's global health work. This began with a request from SMP members through the SMP's Health Forum for more practical support for those working to in the NHS to be able to volunteer internationally.

Working with our members and partners, the Scotland Malawi Partnership has been helping establish new systems to increase coordination of effort in Scotland’s global health work.

We are delighted to have had strong uptake from across the sector, including with NGOs, universities, NHS Trusts and professional bodies, and real leadership from the Scottish Government through the office of the Chief Medical Officer.

Under the Chief Medical Officer’s auspice, a new Scottish Global Health Collaborative (SGHC) has been formed as an “inclusive multidisciplinary and cross-sectoral network established to promote greater coherence, coordination, collaboration and communication in Scotland’s global health activities.”

Chaired by the Scotland’s Chief Medical Officer, the SGHC brings together the Scottish Government and the wider health community, including the NHS, Royal Colleges, the third sector, NGOs and academic institutions, for the delivery of UN Sustainable Development Goal 3.

All Scottish organisations actively involved in Global Health are invited to join the SGHC. It is not just limited to Malawi health links.

The Scotland Malawi Partnership continues to play a leading role within the SGHC and we have been pleased to volunteer capacity to help develop a dedicated website for the SGHC (www.scottishglobalhealth.org) which will be launched by the Chief Medical Officer in February.

Before then, SMP members engaged in health projects can get involved by:

1. Completing SGHC’s survey of Scotland’s current Global Health activities. CLICK HERE if you work in NHSScotland or academia, orCLICK HERE if work within an NGOs or another organisation.

2. Feeding into research/consultations which will inform a proposed NHS Scotland Global Health Framework, by contacting Stuart Fergusson (sjfergusson(at)gmail.com).

3. Joining the SGHC, by emailing David Hope-Jones (david(at)scotland-malawipartnership.org) in the first instance.

Helping us raise awareness of the SGHC by tweeting using the hashtag #ScottishGlobalHealth in February, sharing info about the website (www.scottishglobalhealth.org).
