This week the President of Malawi has been visiting London to attend the Global African Investment Summit.

Speaking at the Lords at the first official engagement of the visit, the President spoke passionately about the friendship between Malawi and Scotland, expressing disappointment that he was not able to visit Scotland on this occasion.

The President spoke with pride about his ex officio role as Honorary Patron of the Malawi Scotland Partnership (the SMP’s sister organisation in Malawi) and said he hoped to arrange a special visit to Scotland in 2016.

Representing our members, the Scotland Malawi Partnership attended three meetings with the President: a meeting of the Malawi and Zambia APPG in the Lords at which the President was speaking; a roundtable discussion at Chatham House chaired by Lord McConnell; and a roundtable with UK business leaders discussing investment opportunities in Malawi. At each of these meetings the President made reference to Malawi’s longstanding friendship with Scotland.

Ideas and opportunities raised by the President and the visiting delegation will be discussed at SMP Member Forums in the coming months.
