The Mzuzu-based publisher Mzuni Press has brought out a new edition of Kenneth R. Ross, Friendship with a Purpose: Malawi and Scotland for Sustainable Development - https://www.africanbookscollective.com/books/friendship-with-a-purpose

This small book was originally published by the Scotland Malawi Partnership in 2018 for the High-Level Conference that was hosted in Lilongwe in September of that year by the Malawi Scotland Partnership.

It takes its starting point from the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, with a special focus on the final goal – “Partnerships for the Goals.” It suggests that the collaboration that has been developed between the two small countries of Scotland and Malawi represents an inspiring example of what is needed if the UN Sustainable Development Goals are to be met.

It sets out distinctive features of the Malawi-Scotland interaction:

  • The priority of the relational
  • The mobilisation of civil society
  • Government in synergy with people
  • A reciprocal partnership for development.

These are illustrated with many examples as the book explores what Rory Stewart, former Africa Minister in the UK Government, described as, “genuinely one of the most unique, remarkable, interesting and human interweavings of two nations anywhere in the world.”

Kenneth Ross was Chair of the Scotland Malawi Partnership 2004-06 and 2010-19. He is currently based in Zomba and is working with Universities and Colleges throughout Malawi.
