Member Blog: Household Permaculture Project - African Vision Malawi

11 July 2024

African Vision Malawi recently shared their Household Permaculture Project report with the SMP. The report was prepared by their M&E Officer, Vitu Mhango and the Permaculture Officer, Kondwani Galanga.

“African Vision Malawi is implementing household permaculture project, which commenced in 2019. The projects long-term goal is to “increase food sovereignty” by providing knowledge and skills on permaculture practice to individual households and to offer start - up seeds, which they multiply for the following year.

Initially African Vision Malawi started with 50 households - 30 from Chigonthi centre and 20 from M’bang’ombe centre. At the outset, the concept of permaculture was new to the residents of these areas. Since its inception, the project has positively impacted 80 individuals who have received training, along with an additional 26 individuals who have also reaped its benefits despite not undergoing formal training. These households now produce their own vegetables on an annual basis.

This year, Africa Vision Malawi have trained 20 households in Lombwa Centre. These trained households have further imparted their knowledge to an additional 11 households who have now established their own gardens for practicing permaculture."

Impact

The project has proven beneficial in enhancing financial stability of people living in these communities through the sale of vegetables. The project has also contributed to the improvement of their nutritional intake and has bolstered food sovereignty within the targeted communities.
