Malawi elects Prof Peter Arthur Mutharika President

The Malawi Electoral Commission has announced that former President, Prof Peter Arthur Mutharika (85) has won the election with 57% of the vote, beating the outgoing President Dr Lazarus Chakwera (70) who gained 33%. Peter Mutharika was previously President 2014-2020.
Congratulations to President-elect Mutharika, with whom we look forward to working.
During a week-long visit to Scotland in 2018, then President Mutharika spent time with individuals and organisations key to Scotland-Malawi links, was guest of honour at an SMP Reception attended by 150 members and addressed the Scottish Parliament. You can read more about this visit here.
