Doonfoot Primary School welcomed some Malawian friends from Bandawe to their school last week.

One of their primary 7 school pupils, Lemone, has summed up the experience. Thank you for getting in touch with the SMP to share your highlights with us!

Lemone's blog:

We were very excited to show our visitors around the school and show them all of the wall displays from our Rights Respecting Schools and Malawi week 2018. They said they were very impressed.

During the week, each year group had lessons based on a theme; Toys, Homes, Water, Farming, Education, Gender Inequality, Poverty and Global Partnerships. It’s a great week.

On the last day, we had a huge assembly and each class shared their learnings with the rest of the school, including the early year’s children. Then in the afternoon we had a fundraising fayre - this year we raised £589 for our partner school.

Our teachers who visited Malawi in the summer tell us that the school needs a new roof on the hostel where the children sleep if their homes are too far away from the school. The roof just now is rusty and leaks rain on their beds. This money will go towards replacing that roof.

Our friends at nearby Alloway Primary School and our friends at Alloway Church are helping us to raise the £3,500 needed to replace it.

As it was our Harvest celebration day and we had raised money to buy “Canny Cookers” for Malawi – sort of like slow cookers which save fuel and are an efficient way to cook – the Malawi visitors joined us. We thought they would like to hear about our lessons too, and so once again we shared our learning.

Our head teacher Mrs Connell asked all of our friends to join the hand print wall in the school. Their hands are all green. We thought of that colour because it’s in the Malawi Flag.

We loved having them visit our school. We look forward to the head teacher from our partner school, Bandawe Primary School spending a week with us in March 2019.
