Black History Month 2024
09 October 2024
This October, Scotland commemorates Black History Month with the theme "Reclaiming Narratives," celebrating the voices and stories of Black communities whose histories have often been overlooked or distorted. This year, we reflect on the rich and complex ties between Malawi and Scotland, exploring how both nations' histories intersect through missionary work, education and trade, as well as the legacies of colonialism. As we reclaim these narratives, we acknowledge the contributions of Malawian leaders, such as John Chilembwe, whose life intertwined with Scottish missionaries and honour the resilience and strength of communities that continue to shape Scotland's cultural landscape today.
The Coalition for Racial Equality and Rights (CRER) works to eliminate racial discrimination and harassment and to promote racial justice across Scotland. They have a dedicated events page for ‘Black History Month Scotland’ available here. The programme includes the lecture by Prof. Wapulumuka Mulwafu, hosted by the University of Strathclyde's department of Humanities and Social Sciences, in partnership with the SMP.
