This virtual but lively event will include fascinating insights into the creation of the book from its author and some of the Malawians whose stories feature in it. We shall be joined by friends from Malawi, members of the Malawian diaspora in Scotland and other special guests. There will also be the chance to win prizes - including a bottle of the famous Malawi gin and a signed copy of the book.

About the book:

Malawi is one of the world’s poorest countries, where the majority of its 18 million population live on less than £300 a year, one million people have HIV/AIDS and more than half of children don’t even finish primary school.

In The Spirit of Malawi, Susan Dalgety explores contemporary Malawi through the voices of its people, like Wezi Mzumara, who dreams of Malawi becoming the fashion capital of Africa and Alexander Galimoto, wrongfully imprisoned in the country’s most notorious prison.

Beautifully observed, this book looks behind the well-worn clichés of sub-Saharan Africa and explores how people really live, from the joy – and pain – of childbirth, to old age and death. Ultimately, Malawi’s story is of hope.

“Susan Dalgety succeeds in shining new light on Malawi’s state and prospects through the testimony of its people whose opinions, experiences and indeed lives matter very greatly.” Dr Peter West, Scottish Honorary Consul of the Republic of Malawi.
