Scottish Government celebrates ten years of Malawi Cooperation

The week of the 2-7th November will mark ten years since the Scottish Government signed the formal Cooperation Agreement with the Government of Malawi.

The Scottish Government have a series of events to mark the anniversary, many of which SMP members and the public are warmly invited to attend.


Wednesday 4th November, 13.30 – 15.00: Malawi Cross Party Group discussing business links.

Scottish Parliament, Edinburgh (EH99 1SP)

This meeting brings together the Malawi Cross Party Group and the SMP’s Business, Trade, Tourism and Investment Forum. It will look back at ten years of Scotland-Malawi collaboration in business and trade, and discuss what the next ten years of cooperation and private sector engagement might hold.

Thursday 5th November, 10.00 – 14.00: Gender Equality Day

COSLA Conference Centre, Edinburgh (EH12 5BH)

The day will highlight the impact the Scottish Government has had over the last decade championing gender equality, and discuss how Scotland can take forwards UN Global Goal 5: to ‘achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls’.

Saturday 7th November, 14.00 – 18.00: Cultural Celebration Day

Grassmarket Community Project, Edinburgh (EH1 2QA)

An afternoon, “book festival style”, event which members of the public can drop in to. All those involved in international development are warmly invited to attend but the Scottish Government also encourages those new to the area to come and learn more.  It will be a fun and interactive afternoon with fantastic speakers, great music and amazing food.  Marking Scotland’s success as a Fair Trade Nation, the afternoon will include stalls promoting fair trade goods available across Scotland.

Speakers to include:

  • Mark Beaumont, cyclist, BBC presenter and adventurer, talking about his Africa Solo cycling trip (1hr). Suggested donation of £10 at the door.  To book a place CLICK HERE.
  • Lizelle Bisschoff (founder of Africa in Motion Film Festival) and Foysol Choudhury (founder of the MELA), talking about setting up and running two of Scotland’s best loved multi-cultural festivals (30 Mins). To book a place CLICK HERE.
  • Romain Pizzi,Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons recognised specialist in Zoo & Wildlife Medicine, to talk about working with animals in Africa & Asia (including key-hole surgery on orangutans!). To book a place CLICK HERE.

Saturday 7th November, 18.00 - 21.30: Tenth Anniversary Ceilidh

Grassmarket Community Project, Edinburgh (EH1 2QA)

To mark ten years of international development, the Scottish Government are inviting those who have been involved in the programme –or are just keen to learn more- to attend a ceilidh of Scottish and African dancing.  Fusion music coming from Rise Kagona (formerly of the Bundu Boys) and the Pentlands Ceilidh Band.  Suggested donation of £10 on the door.
