WASH in Schools Forum
Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) in schools, is a programme that aims to improve children's health and learning by providing access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene facilities and education.
This session provided an overview of progress and challenges facing WASH in Schools in Malawi.
The forum heard from a series of speakers:
Tracy Morse, Professor of Environmental Health, University of Strathclyde chaired the session, setting out the importance of WASH in Schools and the need for informed and transformational approaches.
Alexander Mwangonde, Chief Sanitation Officer, Ministry of Water and Sanitation set the scene of the challenges and opportunities for WASH in Schools. He provided an overview of the current status of WASH in Schools, as well as the targets and ambitions for the Government of Malawi.
Natasha Mwenda, WASH for Public Health Programme Manager, WaterAid provided an overview of WaterAid programmes and projects in primary schools and early childhood development centres across Malawi. She also highlighted the new technical guidance for WASH in Schools recently published by WaterAid and UNICEF.
Kondwani Chidziwisano, Director, Centre for Water, Sanitation, Health and Appropriate Technology Development explored the role of research in supporting transformative and evidence-based solutions for WASH in Schools. He provided examples of research undertaken by WASHTED in partnership with government and NGOs.
