MaSP Annual Symposium 2019

On the 5th February, 70 representatives of projects funded by the Scottish Government attended the Malawi Scotland Partnership’s 2019 Symposium in Lilongwe.

Hosted by our sister network, the day brought together the Malawi partners of Scottish Government projects, together with the Government of Malawi and other senior stakeholders, to share learning and build collaboration.

Claire Tynte Irvine (Dep. Director External Affairs) and Nicola Coggan (Malawi Development Officer) represented the Scottish Government at the event, as part of their first visit to Malawi, with Claire asserting the Scottish Government’s commitment to the Scotland-Malawi relationship. The Scotland Malawi Partnership's Deputy Chief Executive Stuart Brown also attended and spoke at the event.

The meeting focussed on shared learning, understanding impact, government engagement and safeguarding. It also disseminated the outcomes from the recent Malawi and Scotland: Together for Sustainable Development Conference.

The Ministry of Gender’s Joseph Kalelo-Phiri also gave a presentation on Safeguarding, with Claire-Tynte Irvine adding the importance of three Ps in relation to Safeguarding: Prevention – Policy (having one) – Procedure (knowing exactly what we would do in the eventuality of a safeguarding issue arising and that this should be as clear as a fire drill procedure).

The event was also a key chance for the Malawi partners of SG-funded projects to come together and meet with representatives of the Malawian and Scottish Governments, with the Government of Malawi praising the Scotland-Malawi relationship and called for greater communication.

Feedback from the day has been very positive, with a number of new links and learning between projects.
