Keynote Speaker: Hon. Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda MP, Malawi’s Minister of Health

Chair: Patrick Grady MP, Chair of the APPG for Malawi

The meeting included a briefing by Malawi’s Minister of Health, Hon. Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda MP, on Covid’s impact in Malawi and the Government’s response since the May election. There followed an open discussion that will cover the health-care response, the economic impact and the potential role for the international community in responding to the crisis.

Malawi's recent Presidential elections hit the headlines because of the Supreme Court's decision to overturn the initial result and the opposition candidate winning an overwhelming victory in the re-run. The new government of President Lazarus Chakwera, however, has been immediately faced with the serious challenge of managing the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Hon Chiponda spoke about priorities for future Scottish support on Covid: healthcare workforce, infrastructure & resilience; PPE; WASH and continued education & sensitisation.
