Malawi APPG meeting with Malawi Vice-President

The SMP, with members of the Malawi All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) met with His Excellency, Saulos Chilima, the Vice-President of Malawi in the House of Commons on 15th October.

The SMP, with members of the Malawi All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG), were delighted to meet His Excellency, Saulos Chilima, the Vice-President of Malawi in the House of Commons on 15th October.

It was an opportunity for the Vice-President to discuss national Malawian priorities with MPs and Peers, and to explore further inter-parliamentary cooperation.

The SMP was also able to brief the Vice-President on Scotland’s many links with Malawi, the strength of friendship between our two nations and the work of our members.

The meeting was attended by UK Parliamentarians including Patrick Grady (MP for Glasgow North), Lord McConnell of Glenscorrodale, Martyn Day (MP for Linlithgow and East Falkirk) and Sir Henry Bellingham MP. The Westminster Foundation for Democracy and the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association were also closely involved.

It built on the Malawi APPG’s meeting in March with His Excellency the President of Malawi, and earlier meetings supported by the Westminster Foundation for Democracy and the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association with Dr Lazarus Chakwera and the Speaker of the Malawi Parliament.

The SMP and the Malawi APPG maintains its political neutrality in the run up to the May 2019 tripartite elections.

After the meeting, the Vice-President watched the Prime Minister’s Brexit address to the House of Commons from the gallery with the SMP.

We understand while in London the Vice-President will also speak at Chatham House.
