Wednesday 13th May, 2020
1-3pm UK time (2-4pm Malawi time)
As with our previous meetings in this series, this meeting looked at both the operational and financial impact of Covid-19 on our members in Scotland, and the impact and spread of Covid-19 in Malawi.
The meeting:
- listened to our members in Scotland and partners in Malawi,
- gave a clear sense of the impact of the virus in Malawi,
- shared information and updates about who is doing what,
- supported shared learning and future collaborative working,
- supported, promoted and connected the various fund-raising appeals,
- shared information about what the SMP is doing so far and explore if there is more our network should be doing
- agreed a set of broad principles which should guide the work of: networks like ours, NGOs and other members, funders and government.
In signing up to the meeting, members were able to propose agenda items and principles of best practice for discussion.
The meeting was split into two parts:
Part 1 (1-2pm UK time / 2-3pm Malawi time):Support and engagement of SMP members in Scotland:
This section briefed and engaged members and partners on what the SMP has done in six key areas identified in the last meeting:
- How best to share key resources and information?
- How to support youth and schools links through covid-19?
- How to support 2020 trips that have been cancelled and postponed?
- How best to mobilise the potential in faith-based links/networks?
- What are the priorities of our partners in Malawi (MaSP members)?
- What are the key principles of engagement the SMP should be advocating?
This section also offered time for input and suggestions on what else the SMP should be doing to support members.
Part 2 (2-3pm UK time / 3-4pm Malawi time): Covid-19 in Malawi:
This section briefed members on the situation in Malawi, listening to the Government of Malawi, the College of Medicine and other key stakeholders actively involved in the Malawian Covid-19 response. We had time to understand and discuss the complex political and constitutional context which may affect Malawi’s covid-19 response.
We had specific discussions on two key areas highlighted by members: Personal Protective Equipment in Malawi (where to source, how to improvise, etc), and the challenge of central messaging to rural and remote areas. We had updates from the fundraising appeals and operational updates from other organisations. There was also open Q&A time and clearly agreed next steps for the SMP.
