Friday, December 6th, Aberdeen

On Friday 6th December, we were delighted to travel to Aberdeen to support three speaking engagements with Aberdeen for a Fairer World MDEC, including sessions with William Kamkwamba.

The first of these sessions took place at the International School of Aberdeen, where over 200 pupils from both the International School and primary schools from the area who had studied The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind in the classroom, came together to listen to William and to ask questions about his story. Questions included things like; “How did you feel when you completed the windmill?” and “What would do differently if you built your windmill again?” and many more!

We then travelled to Bridge of Don Academy where over 100 pupils from S1, S2 and S6 gathered for a session with William. Pupils had studied the book and seen the film version of The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind and took the opportunity to put questions to William about the experience of being on set while filming took place in Malawi. William also took time to sign copies of the book and to take photographs with pupils.

The final session of the day took place at the Oil and Gas Technology Centre which focuses on innovative approaches working towards a net zero carbon future. William spoke to an audience of teachers, STEM practitioners and members of the public then spent time answering questions about his current projects like Moving Windmills.

It was fantastic to see the engagement and excitement of the young people and others involved in the day and we were incredibly grateful to Charlie Barrow and the team at Aberdeen for a Fairer World MDEC, as well as all the venues for hosting and organising the engagements throughout the day.
