Succession of Hon. Joyce Banda to the Presidency of Malawi
The Scotland Malawi Partnership congratulates the Government and people of Malawi on the orderly and constitutional transition which saw the Hon Joyce Banda sworn in today as the new President of the Republic of Malawi. With due respect to the 10 days of national mourning being observed following the death of the late President Bingu wa Mutharika, the Partnership also extends its sincere congratulations to President Joyce Banda on her becoming Head of State, and looks forward with great expectation to the leadership which she will offer to the nation.
Today marks the start of an exciting new chapter in the history of Malawi. With considerable popular support across the country, and with a strong electoral mandate from the 2009 national elections, we are confident that the new President will help to bring the nation together following the economic and democratic challenges it recently faced.
President Joyce Banda’s visit to Scotland, as Foreign Minister, in 2006 to attend the SMP’s Governance Conference is remembered with much affection. The enthusiasm for Malawi-Scotland links which she expressed at that time helped to cement the recently-signed Cooperation Agreement. Since then, collaborative work between Malawi and Scotland has continued to expand and develop. We look forward to working with the Government of Malawi, under President Banda’s leadership, to build, sustain and improve the links between our countries, through formal links at a government and parliamentary level but also between civic society organisations, and between ordinary peoples and communities.
Gender inequality and injustice has been one of the concerns which has united Malawians and Scots in recent years. In this context we recognise that Hon. Joyce Banda is the first female President of Malawi and only the second female African Head of State in modern times. As a champion of the advancement of women and as herself an outstanding role model, we look forward to the contribution that President Banda will make to advancing the rights of women in Malawi and beyond.
We congratulate President Joyce Banda and look forward to strengthening the bilateral friendship between Malawi and Scotland under her leadership.
