UPCOMING SMP EVENTS

Educational Challenges and Successes in Malawi (30th May, 10.00 – 14.30, Stenhouse Primary School, Edinburgh) An event involving 8 Malawian Primary Education Advisers speaking on the challenges and successes of the educational system in Malawi. The event will inform the revised ‘School Partnerships Practical Guide’ and the October Best Practice in School Partnerships Workshop.

Health workshop (9th June, Edinburgh City Chambers): This event hopes to create strategic networking connections between groups who are currently engaged in health-related activities in Malawi. Specifically, we are hoping to create a comprehensive list of contacts which event participants can use to improve the effectiveness of their health-related activities in Malawi, share learning between groups, and identify current gaps in service provision.

Annual General Meeting (13th June, Edinburgh City Chambers): The Scotland Malawi Partnership invites all of its members to attend the 2009 Annual General Meeting on Saturday 13th June, between 10.00 and 13.30, in the Edinburgh City Chambers. The meeting will include a talk by Mike Russell MSP (Minister for Culture, External Affairs and the Constitution) and break out groups looking at primary and secondary education links, higher education links and health links with Malawi.

Independence Day Celebrations (July): Planned with the Malawian Diaspora Advisory Group

David Livingstone event (17th September tbc): Marking the 150th anniversary of Livingstone’s arrival in Malawi and looking back over 150 years of Scotland-Malawi links.

Aberdeen networking event (September): An event bringing together the individuals and organisations in the Aberdeen area that have Malawi links. Those attending will be invited to give a short presentation on their work if they choose.

Tax Seminar: (7th or 8th October, venue tbc): A joint event looking at tax justice with Christian Aid at which Jack McConnell will be speaking.

Best Practice in School Partnerships Workshop (October): Launching the school links database and version 2 of the Schools Practical Guide. The event will aim to facilitate schools to follow best practice in embedding school links within the curriculum.

Church Partnerships Workshop (November): An event looking at what church-church links there are between Scotland and Malawi and seeing what lessons can be learnt from the school links. It is expected that a Practical Guide to church links will be written up from this event.

Health Workshop: (December ’09 / Jan ’10) Specific topic for workshop(s) to be decided by needs assessment leading from 9th June Health event.
