Summary of upcoming 2009 events

Dumfries and Galloway Networking Event (30th March, 4pm, Dumfries): An event brining together the individuals and organisations in the Dumfries and Galloway area that have Malawi links. Those attending will be invited to give a short presentation on their work if they choose.
Interview with Father Francis Kachere: (30th March, 7.30pm, Augustine United Church, Edinburgh): Father Francis is a Roman Catholic Priest from the Parish of Utale 2 in the Liwonde district of Malawi, which includes the last remaining ‘leper colony’ in Malawi; he will be interviewed by Jim Wilkie about his experiences, the history of the mission, the role of the church in healthcare provision and the eventual eradication of leprosy from Malawi.
Edinburgh University Centre for Africa Studies’ ‘Africa in Scotland, Scotland in Africa’ Conference (29th April – 1st May): The SMP will co-sponsor this conference by facilitating the involvement of Prof. Kings Phiri, as a Special Malawian Fellow under the Higher Education Project
Prof. Kings Phiri open lecture about the Malawi election (2nd May, 14.00, Court Senate Suite, Strathclyde University, Glasgow): An event discussing Malawi politics in the lead up to the May election, to include Prof Kings Phiri.
Shipping Stakeholder meeting (8th April): Bringing the key stakeholders together to discuss the results of the shipping survey, to plan the 23rd may shipping workshop and help draft the ‘Practical Guide to Shipping goods to Malawi’.
Climate Change in Malawi (May, details tba): An event looking at the effects of climate change in Malawi, the adaptation that is required and the steps towards mitigation that can be taken.
Shipping Workshop (23rd May, details tba): An event launching the ‘Practical Guide to Shipping Goods to Malawi’.
Educational Challenges and Successes in Malawi (30th May, details tba) An event involving 8 Malawian Primary Education Advisers speaking on the challenges and successes of the educational system in Malawi. The event will inform the revised ‘School Partnerships Practical Guide’ and the October Best Practice in School Partnerships Workshop.
Health workshop (9th June): This event hopes to create strategic networking connections between groups who are currently engaged in health-related activities in Malawi. Specifically, we are hoping to create a comprehensive list of contacts which event participants can use to improve the effectiveness of their health-related activities in Malawi, share learning between groups, and identify current gaps in service provision.
Annual General Meeting (13th June): Speaker tbc
Independence Day Celebrations (July): Planned with the Malawian Diaspora Advisory Group
David Livingstone event (17th September tbc): Marking the 150th anniversary of Livingstone’s arrival in Malawi and looking back over 150 years of Scotland-Malawi links.
Aberdeen networking event (September): An event brining together the individuals and organisations in the Aberdeen area that have Malawi links. Those attending will be invited to give a short presentation on their work if they choose.
Best Practice in School Partnerships Workshop (October): Launching the school links database and version 2 of the Schools Practical Guide. The event will aim to facilitate schools to follow best practice in embedding school links within the curriculum.
Church Partnerships Workshop (November): An event looking at what church-church links there are between Scotland and Malawi and seeing what lessons can be learnt from the school links. It is expected that a Practical Guide to church links will be written up from this event.
