New DFID call on Strategic Partnerships for Higher Education (SHPEIR)

The Scotland Malawi Partnership applauds DFID’s new 'Strategic Partnerships for Higher Education Innovation and Reform' (SPHEIR) programme, which looks to build capacity of higher education in countries like Malawi, working through north-south partnerships.

Effective Higher Education systems are essential for a country to develop the critical skills they need to drive forward sustainable economic development and inclusive growth.

The global demand for Higher Education is growing significantly but improvements in Higher Education tend to be concentrated in higher and middle-income countries. Many African countries lag far behind, with Malawi currently having the world’s lowest university enrolment rate per capita.

Given the scale of grants available (up to £5 million) and the potentially finite absorptive capacity in Malawi, we are encouraging our higher education members to come together to develop a consortium Scotland-Malawi bid.
