The President of Malawi has launched the Malawi Growth and Development Strategy III. This is Malawi’s fourth medium-term national development strategy, and will guide all development work 2017-2022. It is designed to align with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as well as Malawi-specific priorities.

Established by an Act of Parliament, and independent of Government, a new National Planning Commission has been formed to help deliver the MGDSIII. Prof Richard Mkandawire (Chair of the National Planning Commission) and Adwell Zembele (Commission Secretariat) recently visited Scotland shortly after the President launched MGDSIII, to raise awareness of the Commission and the new national strategy. The SMP was delighted to meet Prof Mkandawira and Mr Zembele.

We are keen to help raise awareness of the MGDSIII and encourage all our members and partners to familiarise themselves with this key national strategy and ensure their Malawi partnerships are working within and towards these priorities and structures.

Over the coming year we will look to champion key Scotland-Malawi case studies in each of priorities five MGDSIII national priority areas:

  1. Agriculture, water development and climate change management
  2. Education and skills development
  3. Energy, industry and Tourism development
  4. Transport and ICT infrastructure
  5. Health and population

We will also be hosting conferences, fora and workshops in each of these five areas to support our members to align their work to the MGDSIII.

If you have an inspiring case study and are achieving strong impact in one of these five areas please contact Kathy(at)scotland-malawipartnership.org and we will explore how we can help share your story in Scotland and Malawi.
