Pencil the date into your diaries - Saturday 05 July 2008, 1-4pm. This is
the date of Malawi's 44th Independence Celebrations - the third that Glasgow
has hosted in three years. The Celebrations will take place at Glasgow City
Chambers (George Square, Glasgow, G2 1DU). Admission is free.
The Celebrations will feature the following:
- Civic reception by Glasgow City Council
- Dr Francis Moto, Malawi's High Commissioner to the UK
- Lisa Bird, head of the Scottish Government's International Development Team
- Peter West, Chairman of the Scotland Malawi Partnership
- The Committee of Malawians in Scotland
- Music by Rise and Doug, formerly of the Bhundu Boys, who play African Jive. Check their songs out at

- A selection of traditional and contemporary Malawian music
- Malawian food - please bring a dish to share with other guests!

I found it interesting that on the day of celebration of Malawi's Independence Day.

Who did Malawi get their soventry from to become a country of their own? Where there originally a British colony before they were granted their independence? I know very little about the history of the country, and would like to know this before I travel there later this year.
